Coach Joe Messina
Meet Coach Joe Messina. With four years of coaching girls fast pitch under his belt, this isn’t where it all began. In fact, he started his coaching career as a baseball coach (of all things!) and did that for 12 years before coaching girls fast pitch softball. While coaching baseball, he coached in the community with Foothills Little League at all age divisions and then with the Calgary Expos U18 AA with Baseball Alberta. One of his highlights during this time was capturing the Prairie Championships in 2019 and helping to run the Blue Jays Winter Tour with many current MLB players.
Another highlight of his coaching career was bringing home the Girls Fast Pitch U11 ‘A’ Provincial Silver Medals in 2022 and 2023. In addition, Coach Messina was the Assistant Coach on the U13 Black team in 2023-2024, which included a 52-win season, winning 5 tournaments (two in the USA) and taking home the U13 ‘A’ level Provincial Gold.
Playing career
Coach Messina began his playing career as a young softball player in Saskatoon, SK. He played for many years and ultimately led the Calgary Aces Mixed and Men’s Fast Pitch teams for nearly 20 years. During this time, he was part of numerous provincial tournaments.
Coaching Philosophy
With a life-long passion for softball, Coach Messina tries to instil the same passion in all of his players. He believes that a coach should be able to help their players attain every bit of their potential no matter what their skill level. He also wants all his players to have fun, in a competitive setting, and share those successes with their teammates, families and coaches.
As a returning coach to Kaizen in 2025, Coach Messina says he feels incredibly lucky to be part of the Kaizen organization and we are very lucky to have him as one of our coaches.
Coach Messina is Comp - Intro certified and has taken courses in ethics, strategies, absolutes, planning and teaching.
